Beta 2 microprotein is one of the MHC Class 1 molecules. These proteins are in the cell’s nucleus and composed of Alpha 1, Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 proteins. They are coded through the B2M gene in humans. This molecule enhances smooth muscle relaxation, storing and metabolizing glucose in the liver. It also regulates the response of the skeletal muscle to adrenaline and noradrenaline hormones. The blood test for this molecule also gives information about kidney functions. It also gives information about some types of cancer (multiple myeloma, diagnosis and prognosis of some lymphomas). B2 is also a tumor marker since it is a nuclear protein. The increase in its levels may indicate a tumor due to benign or malign causes. Multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and some other lymphoma species may increase the value at blood levels. This is especially useful for cancer types that due to various causes and may give information on the severity of the cancer, progress of cancer. It also leads to information in treatment of cancer. It may also give information whether cancer has spread to brain cells (if it is present in cerebrospinal fluid)
Interpretation:If blood levels increase during the treatment with certain drugs, tremors, nervous tension, headaches, sudden increases in heartbeat and muscle cramps are seen.
