B Blast Cells

They are immature, rapidly proliferating lymphoblast cells. They are found in bone marrow and blood. Increases are observed in Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), also called B Blast acute lymphocytic leukemia. The most important markers of leukemia are CD19, CD20, CD22 and CD79a. As these cells fill the bone marrow, they prevent the production of normal functioning cells. As a result, abnormal bleeding, infections and anemia occur.
Interpretation:A blast cell density exceeding 20% in the bone marrow leads to diagnosis. 5% or less of the normal bone marrow is blast cells. In ALL, there are no blast cells in the blood.
