ANA is a test for autoimmune disorders. An autoimmune disorder causes immune system to attack the body’s own cells, tissues, and/or organs by mistake. It’s called “antinuclear” because it targets the nucleus (the part of the cell containing the genetic material) of the cells. Therefore, it means that, it attacks the nucleus of one’s own cells.
Interpretation: It is high in Systemic Lupus Erythromatosus (SLE) affecting the joints, blood vessels, kidneys and brain. It is also high in Scloderma affecting the same parts of the body. It elevates in the Sjorgen’s Syndrome, where secretion glands are affected.It is also elevated in some viral diseases. Some medicines are also cause elevations in ANA levels.
