Amylase is an enzyme that helps you digest food. Most of your amylase is made in the pancreas and salivary glands. Alterations in activity shows that there is a pancreatic disorder, alcoholism, infection or pancreatitis.
Interpretation: High levels may indicate acute pancreatitis, an obstruction in pancreas (tumor?) or pancreatic cancer. Low levels may indicate chronic pancreatitis which is getting worse, heavy alcohol intake, liverdiseases and cystic fibrosis.
