Acid Phosphatase (ACP)

Acid phosphatase is an enzyme that releases phosphate in acidic condutions. Phosphate is necessary for energy production for the ATP molecule which provides energy for all metabolic processes. The enzyme is in liver, bone marrow and prostate gland.
Interpretation:Total acid phosphatase is high in bone tumors, liver diseases, Piaget’s disease of bone, reticuloendothelial system diseases, kidney diseases, high fever, after-heart spasms and hyperthyroidism. Prostatic acid phosphatase is significantly elevated in prostate cancers. However, the enzme may also increase in infections and injuries. In prostate cancer cases, prostatic acid phosphatase should be investigated together with PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen).
